[Model Shoot] Tiana Pearls photoshoots (10/09)

Posted in 2009, Color, Digital, Fondren Corner, model shoot, Photo Post, strobist by William Patrick Butler on November 6, 2009

so, like i said last post, here are the photos that have been keeping me so busy for the past few weeks.

back in october, i was contacted by a guy named Jason, who had seen photos i’d taken of The Bachelorettes, and wanted to know if i’d shoot some photos for a jewelry company he was starting up called Tiana Pearls.

him and his partner wanted photos of models wearing their products that they could use for their website and catalog book.

i said i could do it and had about a week and a half to get everything all shot and edited.

time to call in some friends!

lizzie let me borrow her strobist gear.

robin jayne and jenifer day agreed to let me shoot them, and sammi (whose boyfriend is jason) agreed to let me shoot her too.

let’s get busy.

robin, jen, and sammi 3

first up was a morning/afternoon shoot with robin jayne

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (5 of 18)

i’ve been dying to use the rooftop of Fondren Corner as a setting for a shoot so, figured, why not finally do it

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (3 of 42)

also, me and robin had been talking about getting together for a shoot for awhile now, so it was finally time to make that happen too

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (8 of 18)

and last but not least, ever since robin showed me that hat, i’ve been wanting to use it too LoL

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (4 of 42)

all the photos on the roof were shot with natural light.

(dig those shoes…)

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (9 of 18)

i was gonna start off using the speedlite and umbrella…

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (5 of 42)

but here’s a FYI for folks who like to shoot on rooftops…

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (11 of 18)

it can get hella windy up there LoL

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (6 of 42)

so, don’t be like me and not bring a sandbag to weigh down your umbrella stand

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (9 of 42)

but it all ended up good

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (10 of 42)

after i stopped trying to fight the wind and decided to just use natural light, things started going a whole lot smoother.

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (13 of 42)

it’s like i told robin, it was like we had our own, free wind machine 🙂

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (12 of 18)

and now we switch gears, switch outfits, and switch locations!

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (16 of 42)

we’re now inside One Blu Wall Gallery (which is on the first floor of Fondren Corner)

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (19 of 42)

using a combination of natural light and strobe flash

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (20 of 42)

really great lighting situation

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (13 of 18)

One Blu Wall is also were robin works as the gallery director

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (23 of 42)

(at least i think that’s her official title) 🙂

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (25 of 42)

not a fake laugh

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (28 of 42)

this one isn’t either.  what?  i’m a funny guy!  (with a quick trigger finger)

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (32 of 42)

after seeing how this shot came out, i really wished i’d have pulled the curtains for more of them.  love that faded white background

(many thanks to Christina Cannon, co-owner of One Blu Wall, for letting me shoot there) 🙂

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (18 of 18)

location change!  (but i really liked that red dress so no outfit change this time)

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (34 of 42)

we’re still in Fondren Corner, but we’ve gone across the hallway to Wilai (a femme boutique)

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (36 of 42)

i really loved the feel and knew it would be a great setting

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (38 of 42)

(really, my favorite photo of the shoot)

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (41 of 42)

Jason really liked this one

Robin Jayne Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (42 of 42)

and this will wrap up my shoot with Robin Jayne

many thanks to Wilai, who were kind enough to let me shoot there, and to Robin for modeling for me 🙂

next up, Jenifer Day

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (1 of 6)

i shot Jen the same day as Robin, just at different times and locations

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (1 of 46)

i shot Jen during sunset at The Commons at Eudora Welty’s Birthplace

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (3 of 46)

ever since i shot my friend maggie there, i knew i would want to use it again as a location

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (4 of 46)

(jason called this her “meryl streep” look.)

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (6 of 46)

since we weren’t up on a roof there was really no wind so i got to use my off-camera flash while outside this time

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (8 of 46)

i really like the lighting it gave me.  how it worked with the natural light to really make her pop

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (9 of 46)

i finally understand why people like using it.

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (3 of 6)

changed it up a little here.  this time, i like the natural light be the main light and let the strobe be the fill.

really like how it came out.

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (12 of 46)

man, we really picked the perfect time of day to shoot these

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (15 of 46)

getting in a little closer

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (20 of 46)

Jen has modeling experience and we’ve talked about working together before but never seemed to be able to find the time till now

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (22 of 46)

i’m glad we finally did 🙂

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (5 of 6)

and as the sun sinks lower in the sky, it gives us a wonderful backdrop

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (24 of 46)

another personal fav

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (25 of 46)

and with this shot, we bid the sun adieu

time for an outfit change and a slight location change

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (6 of 6)

we’re still at The Commons, but now we’ve moved into the Tattered Pages Bookstore

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (31 of 46)

nightfall means it’s time to wear a black dress

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (33 of 46)

this is on the upper deck of the bookstore

funny thing, while we were shooting these, Mississippi Happening was recording their show a few feet behind me.  so we had live, good music as a soundtrack to the shoot.

not too shabby 🙂

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (38 of 46)

moving back inside, for the last few shots

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (43 of 46)

this one is really too far away to be used (the focus should be more on the jewelry) but i really dig it.

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (44 of 46)

this is the staircase that leads up to the bookstore from the coffee shop downstairs

(another shot you may recognize from the maggie model shoot, just from a different angle)

Jenifer Day Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (46 of 46)

and this will wrap it up for Ms. Jenifer Day 🙂

as i’ve already mentioned, Jen models professional and she’s also a designer.  she’s working on getting a website set up, so be expecting to see more of her and her clothing line in the near future. 🙂

many thanks for modeling for me Jen (and to The Commons for letting me shoot everywhere)

next up, Sammi

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (1 of 1)

i photographed Sammi and few days after my shoots with Robin and Jen

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (5 of 20)

our location was back in Fondren Corner, but this time in the Mosaic furniture and accessories store.

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (7 of 20)

it was a gray and rainy day outside so it was all inside shots for this shoot

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (9 of 20)

Sammi was actually a little nervous starting out.  she had never done any modeling before

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (11 of 20)

(remember, i’m a very funny guy)

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (13 of 20)

but i knew she didn’t have anything to be nervous about.

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (14 of 20)

she did great 🙂

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (16 of 20)

i think i have Sammi to thank for this job, in a round about way

Sammi Gannon Tiana Pearls shoot (vertical) (18 of 20)

she works over at the Institute of Southern Jewish Life and two of The Bachelorettes (Rachel and Amanda) have also worked there

so, i’m thinking that’s how Jason got exposed The Bachelorettes in the first place.

just a hunch 😉

day change, location change, outfit change coming up next!  (and many thanks to Courtney, who owns Mosaic, for letting me shoot there)

Sammi Gannon (10.21.09) (2 of 10)

so, a couple of days after i dropped the final photos off, Jason let me know that he’d forgotten to give me a piece of jewelry to shoot

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (4 of 23)

so, he asked if i could shoot Sammi wearing it.

Sammi Gannon (10.21.09) (5 of 10)

not a problem 🙂

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (7 of 23)

our first location was right outside of Chane’s new store in Fondren Corner (yeah, i shot around Fondren a lot this time)

but after this shot we would pack up and head into downtown Jackson to get some more shots

Sammi Gannon (10.21.09) (7 of 10)

in fact, our new location was were i shot Hanh a few months back

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (12 of 23)

i love that old style phone booth.

always reminds me of Dr. Who

(that’s right, i’m a geek) 😉

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (13 of 23)

i could tell Sammi was more at ease during this shoot.  i think we both knew we could trust each other to get good shots 🙂

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (16 of 23)

wanted to get her away from the red background of the phone booth for a few shots

Sammi Gannon (10.21.09) (10 of 10)

heh, ok, this was funny.

this is a door that leads into a building (you can see the room lights behind her)

this door was locked while we were shooting and you had to buzz to be let in.

well, while we were shooting, a USPS delivery guy came to drop off some stuff and, as he was leaving i told Sammi to grab the door so i could get some shots of her acting like she was coming out of it.

after a few snaps, i notice that the security guy at his desk inside was starting to look at us like “what the hell?” so, that’s when we let the door actually close and headed back to the phone booth LoL

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (18 of 23)

(same shot just vertical)

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (20 of 23)

she has a great smile

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (23 of 23)

which, if you’ve noticed…

Sammi Gannon (vertical) (10.21.09) (21 of 23)

is why i always had her smiling 99% of the time 😉

and that will wrap it up what’s been keeping me so busy lately 🙂

once again, many thanks to the ladies for modeling for me and for all the locations that let me shoot there.

make sure you check out the Tiana Pearls website when it launches this month!  (of course i’ll link it when it does.)

((EDIT: it’s launched! click the link above))

some of the photos i’ve posted will be used on there.

which ones?

well, guess you’ll have to check the website and see 😉

next post…well, i’m not sure what i’ll have in the next post.  guess it’ll be a surprise for me too 😉

have a good one everybody
