[Model Shoot] Tiana Pearls photoshoots (10/09)
so, like i said last post, here are the photos that have been keeping me so busy for the past few weeks.
back in october, i was contacted by a guy named Jason, who had seen photos i’d taken of The Bachelorettes, and wanted to know if i’d shoot some photos for a jewelry company he was starting up called Tiana Pearls.
him and his partner wanted photos of models wearing their products that they could use for their website and catalog book.
i said i could do it and had about a week and a half to get everything all shot and edited.
time to call in some friends!
lizzie let me borrow her strobist gear.
let’s get busy.
first up was a morning/afternoon shoot with robin jayne
i’ve been dying to use the rooftop of Fondren Corner as a setting for a shoot so, figured, why not finally do it
also, me and robin had been talking about getting together for a shoot for awhile now, so it was finally time to make that happen too
and last but not least, ever since robin showed me that hat, i’ve been wanting to use it too LoL
all the photos on the roof were shot with natural light.
(dig those shoes…)
i was gonna start off using the speedlite and umbrella…
but here’s a FYI for folks who like to shoot on rooftops…
it can get hella windy up there LoL
so, don’t be like me and not bring a sandbag to weigh down your umbrella stand
but it all ended up good
after i stopped trying to fight the wind and decided to just use natural light, things started going a whole lot smoother.
it’s like i told robin, it was like we had our own, free wind machine 🙂
and now we switch gears, switch outfits, and switch locations!
we’re now inside One Blu Wall Gallery (which is on the first floor of Fondren Corner)
using a combination of natural light and strobe flash
really great lighting situation
One Blu Wall is also were robin works as the gallery director
(at least i think that’s her official title) 🙂
not a fake laugh
this one isn’t either. what? i’m a funny guy! (with a quick trigger finger)
after seeing how this shot came out, i really wished i’d have pulled the curtains for more of them. love that faded white background
(many thanks to Christina Cannon, co-owner of One Blu Wall, for letting me shoot there) 🙂
location change! (but i really liked that red dress so no outfit change this time)
we’re still in Fondren Corner, but we’ve gone across the hallway to Wilai (a femme boutique)
i really loved the feel and knew it would be a great setting
(really, my favorite photo of the shoot)
Jason really liked this one
and this will wrap up my shoot with Robin Jayne
many thanks to Wilai, who were kind enough to let me shoot there, and to Robin for modeling for me 🙂
next up, Jenifer Day
i shot Jen the same day as Robin, just at different times and locations
i shot Jen during sunset at The Commons at Eudora Welty’s Birthplace
ever since i shot my friend maggie there, i knew i would want to use it again as a location
(jason called this her “meryl streep” look.)
since we weren’t up on a roof there was really no wind so i got to use my off-camera flash while outside this time
i really like the lighting it gave me. how it worked with the natural light to really make her pop
i finally understand why people like using it.
changed it up a little here. this time, i like the natural light be the main light and let the strobe be the fill.
really like how it came out.
man, we really picked the perfect time of day to shoot these
getting in a little closer
Jen has modeling experience and we’ve talked about working together before but never seemed to be able to find the time till now
i’m glad we finally did 🙂
and as the sun sinks lower in the sky, it gives us a wonderful backdrop
another personal fav
and with this shot, we bid the sun adieu
time for an outfit change and a slight location change
we’re still at The Commons, but now we’ve moved into the Tattered Pages Bookstore
nightfall means it’s time to wear a black dress
this is on the upper deck of the bookstore
funny thing, while we were shooting these, Mississippi Happening was recording their show a few feet behind me. so we had live, good music as a soundtrack to the shoot.
not too shabby 🙂
moving back inside, for the last few shots
this one is really too far away to be used (the focus should be more on the jewelry) but i really dig it.
this is the staircase that leads up to the bookstore from the coffee shop downstairs
(another shot you may recognize from the maggie model shoot, just from a different angle)
and this will wrap it up for Ms. Jenifer Day 🙂
as i’ve already mentioned, Jen models professional and she’s also a designer. she’s working on getting a website set up, so be expecting to see more of her and her clothing line in the near future. 🙂
many thanks for modeling for me Jen (and to The Commons for letting me shoot everywhere)
next up, Sammi
i photographed Sammi and few days after my shoots with Robin and Jen
our location was back in Fondren Corner, but this time in the Mosaic furniture and accessories store.
it was a gray and rainy day outside so it was all inside shots for this shoot
Sammi was actually a little nervous starting out. she had never done any modeling before
(remember, i’m a very funny guy)
but i knew she didn’t have anything to be nervous about.
she did great 🙂
i think i have Sammi to thank for this job, in a round about way
she works over at the Institute of Southern Jewish Life and two of The Bachelorettes (Rachel and Amanda) have also worked there
so, i’m thinking that’s how Jason got exposed The Bachelorettes in the first place.
just a hunch 😉
day change, location change, outfit change coming up next! (and many thanks to Courtney, who owns Mosaic, for letting me shoot there)
so, a couple of days after i dropped the final photos off, Jason let me know that he’d forgotten to give me a piece of jewelry to shoot
so, he asked if i could shoot Sammi wearing it.
not a problem 🙂
our first location was right outside of Chane’s new store in Fondren Corner (yeah, i shot around Fondren a lot this time)
but after this shot we would pack up and head into downtown Jackson to get some more shots
in fact, our new location was were i shot Hanh a few months back
i love that old style phone booth.
always reminds me of Dr. Who
(that’s right, i’m a geek) 😉
i could tell Sammi was more at ease during this shoot. i think we both knew we could trust each other to get good shots 🙂
wanted to get her away from the red background of the phone booth for a few shots
heh, ok, this was funny.
this is a door that leads into a building (you can see the room lights behind her)
this door was locked while we were shooting and you had to buzz to be let in.
well, while we were shooting, a USPS delivery guy came to drop off some stuff and, as he was leaving i told Sammi to grab the door so i could get some shots of her acting like she was coming out of it.
after a few snaps, i notice that the security guy at his desk inside was starting to look at us like “what the hell?” so, that’s when we let the door actually close and headed back to the phone booth LoL
(same shot just vertical)
she has a great smile
which, if you’ve noticed…
is why i always had her smiling 99% of the time 😉
and that will wrap it up what’s been keeping me so busy lately 🙂
once again, many thanks to the ladies for modeling for me and for all the locations that let me shoot there.
make sure you check out the Tiana Pearls website when it launches this month! (of course i’ll link it when it does.)
((EDIT: it’s launched! click the link above))
some of the photos i’ve posted will be used on there.
well, guess you’ll have to check the website and see 😉
next post…well, i’m not sure what i’ll have in the next post. guess it’ll be a surprise for me too 😉
have a good one everybody
